Nutrient limitation of primary producers in High-arctic streams
Objective:
The objectives of this study is to determine the effect of increasing DOM and inorganic N and P content in five high-arctic streams with stable ground water flow on primary production, ecosystem respiration, and nutrient cycling. The study will provide a mechanistic understanding of the effect on a future increase in DOM and inorganic nutrient in high-arctic streams.
Methods and logistics
The five study streams are situated close to Zackenberg Research Station (zone 1A og 1B). We will measure effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM), N and P content in ground-water fed streams on primary production and ecosystem respiration by measuring diurnal oxygen content over three weeks. Nutrient cycling parameters are determined by short-term release of DOM (acetate), dissolved organic nitrogen (DIN; glycerine) and inorganic N and P (NaNO3, NH4Cl and KPO4) following Tank et al. (2006). Nutrient limitation in biofilms is determined by nutrient diffusion substrate (NDS; Tank et al. 2006). We will relate nutrient spiraling parameters to stream hydromorphology, metabolism parameters and biotic abundance and composition.
