Climate and lake ecosystem dynamics in the high Arctic, over the Holocene, using lake sediment records
This project aims to determine the sensitivity of the Greenland Ice Sheet and glaciers in northwestern Greenland to climate changes during our current interglacial period, the Holocene (the past 11,650 years). We will determine the timing and magnitude of past ice fluctuations using lake sediments near the ice margins. We will extract lake sediment cores from isolated lake basins near the coast to reconstruct relative sea level changes, and we will collect biological and chemical samples in all the lakes to get a status of the present situation with and without top predators present in the systems.
Field site: Lakes at the Mac Cormick Fiord, near Qaanaaq, Greenland
